The Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park is a crossroads between the Mediterranean and Europe. Here you’ll find the highest peaks of the Northern Apennines, such as Mount Cusna, Mount Prado, and Alpe di Succiso, as well as iconic sites such as the Pietra di Bismantova. Since 2015, the Park has been a UNESCO MaB Reserve, and since 2023, the Upper Secchia Valley has been a World Heritage Site.

Nature and biodiversity

The territory offers a unique mosaic of environments: Mountaintop meadows, beech and conifer forests, deep valleys, lakes, and peat bogs.
Among the fauna are golden eagles, wolves, deer, wild boars, and a wide variety of birds and amphibians.

History and culture

Ancient villages, parish churches, castles, towers, and museums bear witness to centuries of encounters and cultural exchanges along the historic routes that crisscross the province of Reggio Emilia from north to south. Among these are the Sentiero dei Ducati, the Sentiero Lazzaro Spallanzani, and the Via Matildica del Volto Santo. These ancient trade and pilgrimage routes, crossing the lands of Matilda of Canossa and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park, descend from Lunigiana and Garfagnana toward Lucca and, via the Via Francigena, toward Rome and the far south of Italy.
